Because you asked...

  1. The blog won't let me copy and paste from TextEdit and post it on here, so here it is:

Every day in Morocco, I see something that surprises me. Sometimes it's funny things, like an entire sedan stuffed to the brim with loaves of bread, or an entire family of four on one moped, sometimes it's scary, like a hole straight through the floor of the bus to the road, and sometimes it's just plain overwhelming, like when they bring out the third course of a meal and it's half a lamb, when you just ate 3 chickens for course number two (okay, this happens a lot with food). And I still can't quite get used to there not being any toilet paper or soap in any of the bathrooms. But regardless, the longer I stay here, the more confused I get about Morocco.

The whole country can't seem to figure out whether they are African or Middle Eastern, democracy or not, traditional or modern, Pro or Anti-America. But the people are very friendly, and they are extra friendly if you make any attempt to speak Arabic. And surprisingly enough, I get mistaken for a Moroccan pretty frequently.

Everywhere I have been so far in Morocco, all the Moroccans have said that I shouldn't go now, I should go in summer. My host family always says, "It is not nice. I don't think you will like it." The one place that Moroccans say is nice is Marrakech, and we're going this weekend. I'm wondering whether it will live up to all the hype, especially because I have heard it's very touristy. The main square apparently has snake charmers and people with monkeys for tourists to take pictures with (with the monkey on your shoulder or something). I'm very curious to see whether Moroccans' favorite place in Morocco is very Moroccan, or just a commercialized version for vacationing Westerners.
